Artist’s Statement

What drew me to sculpture was the concept of working in the round and the discovery of having the piece evolve before my eyes. Over the years I have learned that what emerges will, in some ways, be different to the original concept. I have found that I retain the original idea but the finished work is a greater development and evolution of the initial concept.

When I first established my studio I knew that I would have to allow myself develop my skills in a thoughtful and constructive manner. This process continues today as every piece of work is an improvement on the one preceding it. My work is mainly figurative as it is through the figure that I feel I can express strength, rhythm and movement. The mass of the figure is the one element I strive to retain, and it is over this that I impose the rhythm and movement, and a sense of energy. It is my hope that the viewer will share this same sense of energy and life when encountering my work.
